Many children are excited to see large trucks and buses on the road, so the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and it partners are calling on all students to be safety ambassadors to help make our roads a safer. Students can encourage safe driving while showcasing their artistic talents in an annual Road Safety Art Contest.

The contest, which launched March 14, 2022, is a unique way to introduce road safety early. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade can use their imagination to make a serious topic enjoyable, memorable and educational. It gives teachers and families a fun way to help children and teens learn about traveling safely around large trucks and buses. While there are many factors in road safety, sharing the roads with commercial motor vehicles hinges on understanding three operating constraints that can be readily grasped:

· These big vehicles can’t stop quickly.

· They need more room to turn safely.

· They have large blind spots on all sides.

Children and teens have the creativity to explore and illustrate these safety concepts through FMCSA’s annual art contest. Submissions can be hand-drawn or digital art, animated or live videos, crafts, and photos. The contest is open until June 3, 2022.

In addition to the art contest, kids can learn more about road safety by visiting the FMCSA Kid Zone, which features animated videos, downloadable activity sheets, and an interactive “Choose Your Own Adventure” game.

High school students can visit the FMCSA Teen Zone to learn important driving techniques. As parents or upcoming drivers, it is never too early for road safety education, especially through expressive creativity– like the art contest.

Thanks for sharing the road safely, no matter how you travel!
