FMCSA Helps with a Seamless Transition from Military Service to the Transportation Industry

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served in America’s Armed Forces, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) proudly celebrates and honors America’s veterans for their patriotism and love of country by helping them continue to serve in a remarkable industry after transitioning from the military.

The FMCSA’s Military Driver Programs provide transitioning military members and veterans the opportunity to skip some of the more time-consuming aspects of the job-hunting process, such as trying to translate military skills into HR-ready resume or getting a decent salary.

The Military Skills Test Waiver and Even Exchange programs serve as an easier, quicker, and less expensive way to help expediate the commercial driver’s license process while putting safe and reliable drivers on the roads. Driving large tractor-trailers or delivery trucks is one of the largest occupations in the United States. With recent developments, there is a surge for freight transportation services. The trucking industry continues to increase initiatives that make this career path even more attractive. From improved health benefit packages and 401(k)s to significant boosts in pay and signing bonuses, the transportation industry can help put military members and Veterans in the driver’s seat of their careers.

Additionally, military personnel can leverage commercial motor vehicle operator safety training (CMVOST) from multiple accredited training institutions or institutions of higher education. As part of the CMVOST Grant Program, these institutions assist current or former members of the U.S. Armed Forces and certain family members attain training to transition to the CMV operation industry.
