As part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, WOTAB was chartered by Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg in 2022. The advisory board is tasked with reviewing and reporting on policies that provide education, training, mentorship, or outreach to women in the trucking industry and supporting the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the industry.

Women are significantly underrepresented in the trucking industry. Despite making up 47 percent of the U.S. workforce, within the trucking industry women make up only:

  • 12.5 percent of all workers in trucking industry
  • 8 percent of truck drivers
  • 8 percent of freight firm owners

Increasing the number of women in trucking could also make the industry safer — women truck drivers are 20 percent less likely than their male counterparts to be involved in a crash.

For this meeting, WOTAB has been asked to examine ways in which trucking companies, nonprofit organizations, training and education providers, and trucking associations may coordinate functions to facilitate support for women pursuing careers in trucking.

The Department of Transportation is committed to helping expand opportunities for women in trucking by promoting safe and inclusive work environments, which would help further strengthen the nation’s supply chain.
