Keeping Pedestrians and Young Drivers Safe on Our Roads

  • During Pedestrian Safety Month and as the weather cools down, many of us will start taking more brisk walks to enjoy the beautiful weather that the autumn has to offer. It is important to recognize the safety challenges pedestrians face when sharing the roads. Unlike other road users, they lack protection, move slower, and can be hard for drivers to see — particularly truck and bus drivers. Whether you’re a pedestrian yourself or driving around one, make yourself visible and stay aware of your surroundings. You can find more pedestrian safety information at https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/ourroads/tips-bicyclists-and-pedestrians.

  • National Teen Driver Safety Week kicked off October 17. As a new or soon-to-be driver, learning how to share the road safely with large trucks and buses early on is important. Being new to the road has its challenges, but an informed driver is a safe driver. Help prepare these young drivers to understand more about watching out for trucks and buses making wide turns, blind spots and stopping distances. Share FMCSA’s Teen Zone with your young driver to help sharpen developing driving skills and roadway awareness.
