Buckle your seatbelt, plan your route, and safely travel the roadways with holiday cheer. As more Americans become vaccinated against COVID-19, travel on our nations roadways continues to increase. If you and your family embrace road trips to connect with loved ones, plan to share the road safely with many buses and trucks this holiday season. Road safety is a shared commitment.
Here are a few roadway safety reminders as we head out to gather with family, friends, and others to this season.
- Larger vehicles need longer following distance to see vehicles behind them, If you can’t see the driver in his or her side mirror, the driver can’t see you, always scan ahead about 15 seconds for traffic issues, work zones, and other danger.
- The stopping time and distance for a truck or bus is much greater than that of smaller vehicles. Never suddenly cut in front of a truck as it reduces the truck’s allowable safe stopping distance
- On average, over 700 fatalities occur in work zones each year. When driving through a work zone keep your distance — rear-end crashes are extremely common in work zones. Be sure to maintain extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
This holiday season, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration urges roadway users to responsibly share the road with large trucks and buses and help keep everyone safe.
