Plan It. Pack It. Protect It: Tips and Resources for a Successful Move

Many people pack up their belongings and move to a new state during May, which is why it’s National Moving Month. As more families, young professionals, military personnel, and empty nesters pack up their belongings and cross state lines for new and better opportunities, this is when moving scams skyrocket, often costing Americans both thousands of dollars and irreplaceable losses.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) provides free tools and resources that will help keep frustrations from bubbling over. One of our most valuable assets is our registered movers database, which helps ensures that your moving company is reputable while also showcasing any grievances or safety violations that have been filed against it.

To celebrate National Moving Month, we’ve compiled a list of some useful tips for a stress-free move.

· Ask for recommendations from neighbors, friends, and relatives regarding the mover and broker.

· Obtain estimates from at least three movers or brokers and compare cost and all other services to be provided by the companies.

· Check to determine whether the interstate mover and broker is registered with FMCSA and has a U.S. DOT number.

· Check with the Better Business Bureau regarding the mover and broker.

· Obtain the booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move from the mover and broker.

· Find out what the mover’s responsibilities are for damages that may occur to your belongings.

· Ask if the mover and broker have a dispute settlement program.

· Find out how and when pickup and delivery of your household goods will occur.

· Ask the mover and broker how they can be contacted before the move, during the move, and after the move.

· Adequately insure your belongings.

While there are many moving companies that do a great job, the sad truth is some movers are just more interested in putting money in their pockets than putting your belongings in safe hands. Don’t let these dishonest moving companies burst your bubble!
