Unsecured and loose items in a moving vehicle is dangerous and unlawful. When transporting a load in an open trailer or the bed of truck, roadway conditions and high winds can result in items being thrown out creating a hazard to other motorists traveling around you. When loads become airborne, other vehicles can strike the debris, causing vehicle damage, loss of vehicle control, and obstruction of the vehicle operator’s view. Items thrown out of a moving vehicle can be deadly.

Secure Your Load.

Many states have imposed hefty fines and even jail time against vehicle operators transporting unsecured loads. It takes a few moments to double-check your load to assure you have taken all the steps to prevent any items from departing an open trailer or the bed of a truck. It is important to understand that the few moments you take to double-check your load, can save lives, and prevent motor vehicle collisions. Before heading on the road, vehicle operators transporting a load should ask themselves a few of these questions:

  • Have I overloaded my vehicle or trailer?
  • Have I tied down large objects directly to the vehicle?
  • Is my load secured at the back, side, and top?

Here are a few tips on how to secure a load:

  • Tie-down any items with a rope, netting, or reliable straps.
  • Tie large objects to your vehicle or trailer.
  • Be sure that animals are properly secured.
