Road Safety Art Contest

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announces the 2024 Road Safety Art Contest. This annual competition encourages students to use their creativity and talent to raise awareness of how to stay safe on our roads around large trucks and buses. The contest is open to four groups spanning grades K-12, with multiple submission categories.

Contest Grade Groups

Students must be in one of the grade groupings below as of June 7, 2024. For example, a student who is completing 5th grade in June would be part of Category 2.

  • Grouping 1: Grades K-2
  • Grouping 2: Grades 3–5
  • Grouping 3: Grades 6–8
  • Grouping 4: Grades 9–12

Submission Requirements

All submissions must adhere to the contest rules to be eligible.

  • Hand-Drawn Art: Crayon, colored pencil, marker, paint, etc.
  • Digital Art: Graphic design, digital drawing, etc.
  • Craft: Handmade items such as a collage, diorama, etc.
  • Video: Spoken message, song, dance, skit, etc. (No more than 30 seconds long.)
  • Photo: Captured with phone or digital camera.

Winning artwork will best depict through original creativity how all road users — from cars, to bikers, to pedestrians — can stay safe around large trucks and buses by staying aware of their big blind spots, long stopping distance, and wide turns. Use these tips to make your submission stand out:

  1. Focus on the positive. A picture of people sharing the road safely is more successful than a horrific crash scene.
  2. Make sure your submission includes trucks and/or buses.
  3. If showing people driving or in a vehicle, everyone is wearing a seatbelt.
  4. Include a safety message, such as “stay out of a truck’s blind spot.”

For more ideas and inspiration, students can view previous winning artwork and learn more about large trucks and buses at FMCSA’s Kid Zone and Teen Zone.
