FMCSA’s I-81 Safety Initiative begins this month as summer travel increases across the Nation. This initiative brings the six I-81 states (NY, PA, MD, WV, VA & TN) together in a coordinated effort to reduce crashes and risky driving along this iconic interstate that connects Canada to the Tennessee Valley.

Together, make I-80 Safe. Extra Enforcement Out June 8 & 11. U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

This effort began in the summer of 2021 as incidents of crashes and excessive speeding began to increase along the corridor. The FMCSA Division Administrators in the six states were tasked with working with one another and the FMCSA Outreach Division to develop both an operational strategy to target specific locations for inspections and traffic enforcement, as well as a targeted paid media and outreach plan all along the corridor. The year’s I-81 safety initiatives kicks off the week of June 6th and continues through August .

As you travel the corridor this summer, you will likely see the message, “Together, We Make I-81 Safer”, encouraging safer driving behaviors and increasing awareness on roadway safety. While traveling along I-81 to your favorite summer destinations, please drive safely and enjoy the beautiful scenery this corridor offers.
